A Startup and New Technology-Development Disruptor
The eldest son of a primary school teacher and a scientific researcher, Pete Moores’ formative years were spent living on a farm in the Cornish countryside, taking an active role in rearing animals and growing crops. Aged 11, he started what would become a lifelong love affair with drums by constructing a drum kit out of cardboard moving boxes and making drumsticks in his school woodwork class! Over the years, music introduced Pete to new friends and has been an outlet for his creativity. Studying Chemical and Process Engineering at Newcastle University and in later years completing his Master’s in Business Administration provided him with insights into both academic and commercial worlds, which he puts to good use in working at the intersection of science, industry, and funding, the “Triple Helix” in which he has worked for over 22 years.
Starting PBM Consulting Ltd brought together Pete’s desire to turn around the statistic that nine out of every ten startups fail and an unshakable belief that he could provide the commercial insights that help founders be more successful. It also created a realisation that the growth options available to ambitious founders all come with significant downsides such as paying percentages of investment raised to brokers or giving up equity in the company in return for support of intermediate value. “I wanted to tear up the traditional rules and provide a better way forward for companies. In talking to investors, universities and founders over the last 2 years I have built a consulting offer that takes the approaches that have built many successful Unicorns and makes it affordable, and instantly available, to company leaders.”
Pete’s “Flight Path” offer helps companies arrive safely at their next funding destination. It uses the principles of the Google Ventures Design Sprint to rapidly accelerate the development of world-leading propositions, strategies, and stand-out marketing that secure investment & win customers, without taking equity or a share of investment raised.
Pete is aware of how interconnected his work and personal lives are and that he needs to keep himself in good physical health to have the energy to push himself every day to help his clients. The right mental approach and mindset are key to being successful whilst maintaining his relationships with others, a good diet, nutrition and overall well-being. Entrepreneurship is embedded in Pete’s family’s DNA as his ancestors built one of the most successful hat manufacturing companies in Denton, Manchester which at its peak employed over 1,300 people. His appetite is driven and built on helping people, specifically leaders of technology companies, to achieve more success and fulfil their ambitions.
The year 2020 was of immense transformation for him as on 3rd Jan he was badly injured whilst riding a bicycle and narrowly escaped death at the hands of a 50 mph Mercedes. This, two months before COVID hit, brought his six-year career as Commercial Director for a consultancy spinout from Oxford University to a juddering halt. He then founded PBM Consulting Ltd in September 2020 to help to make technology companies more successful, especially with the additional pressures of the pandemic. His observations that the pandemic catalysed many collaborations, innovations, and new ways of working inspired him to create better ways of growing a successful technology company.
During his recovery, Pete was diagnosed with Adult-ADHD. Rather than view this as a weakness, he saw his neurodiversity as a Superpower! “I am able to formulate unique solutions to complex problems with multiple inputs very quickly and think of options and viewpoints others don’t consider.” In his past, Pete spent many years as Head Mentor for a global innovator development programme that helped over 900 entrepreneurs launch new technology businesses and secure over £90M in funding. He also developed the commercial model for a focussed intervention programme to improve engineering operations in the Advanced Manufacturing sector and has created and delivered a programme of training and mentoring to support the development of 34 Digital Innovation Hubs across new EU Member States.
Pete feels proud to be a disrupter in an industry that provides the world with technology solutions that make it a better place to live in. Bringing a new-to-the-world product from idea to commercial reality is a difficult and exhausting journey, with many unknowns that must be navigated. He refuses to accept the status quo which sees nine out of ten startups end in failure, and, to this end, freely shares the knowledge that he has built up. He believes humans are duty-bound to live life to their full potential and take charge of their own development. “I am always open to new collaborations, particularly with those who share my passion for making science and technology companies become more successful”. It sounds like this is a guiding principle that Pete embodies at PBM Consulting Ltd.
