Pioneering the prevention of Type-2 Diabetes
When you have lived a life of hardships, you naturally gravitate towards elevating the society as a whole. This is certainly true in the case of Dr. Biplab Kumar Malo, a US based Dentist and Medical Entrepreneur, who is pioneering the prevention of Type-2 Diabetes through a novel biomedical innovation – the STAP Test.
Dr. Malo was born in Bangladesh during the independence war. His mother gave him birth while trying to escape the enemy on an open field. Biplab thus grew up in a small village without electricity. He moved to the city for higher secondary at Notre Dame College, Dhaka. With support from his elder brother, he made his way to the United States for a Bachelor of Science (BS) in interdisciplinary studies from Southeast Missouri State University. He then attended University of Pennsylvania for his professional degree Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) in 2000, and had his internship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Emory School of Medicine.
Biplab was the first dentist to graduate as a citizen of Bangladesh from UPSDM. After two decades in the field, he now operates his own dental clinic in Massachusetts – Foster Street Dental. He is also a member of the American Dental Society since 2001, and Massachusetts Dental Society since 2008.
Speaking about his journey across the world, he says, “My eldest brother Dr. MS Malo is my inspiration. We always knew that someday, we will make a difference in the society. I want to continue his legacy. I also have my own projects, which are patent pending.”
Biplab’s eldest brother Dr. Madhu S Malo, MBBS, PhD, was working on microbiome, specifically on Intestinal Alkaline Phosphatase (IAP), for 20 years. In the last 10 years, he was focusing on IAP and Diabetes. Finally in 2020, he received the patent for ‘Diagnosis and treatment of Incipient Diabetes’, and his Final paper came out in the British Medical Journal in January 2022.
Aware of his brother’s struggle and subsequent achievement, and recognizing the significance and impact of his work, Biplab established STAPGEN LLC in February 2022, with his brother as the chief scientist. STAPGEN is a Biotech/Medtech company whose flagship product is the – STAP TEST, a revolutionary diagnostic tool that measures IAP in stool samples to detect Type-2 Diabetes, 5 years prior to the advent of the disease!
Type-2 Diabetes is a global health challenge that affects millions of people. STAP Test thus has the potential to save lives, reduce healthcare costs, and improve quality of life for millions across the globe. When Biplab established the company, he thought everybody would welcome the solution they provide. Yet he soon came to realize that prevention of Type 2-Diabetes is not welcomed by all. They were unable to secure any VC funding, or any grants.
“We instead turned to crowdfunding and raised our initial funding from the community. Our products and services will bring significant change in management of Diabetes and the healthcare system. As STAPGEN grows, the community will also grow.”
As a pioneer in prevention technology for Type-2 Diabetes, STAPGEN has already paved the way for others to follow. However, only a pioneer faces challenges that no-one else may. “Starting a Biotech company is difficult. The competitors are spending billions of dollars to bypass our efforts, and without recognizing our contribution. I have been keeping records, and will post in public if the situation arrives. Still, we believe in people and hope they come around. We will also need public help to bring the product to the market. In every visit to your doctor, ask for a STAP Test. To know more about it, go to www.stapgen.com.”
Such grit and drive is what makes Biplab a community leader. He was the 3rd President, and currently serves as an advisor to UTSHAB, the New England Hindu Society in Boston, a recognized non-profit organization. Recently, he was also recognized for his contribution in healthcare by Health 2.0, Las Vegas, while STAPGEN was recognized as the Leading Pioneer in Prevention Technology of Type-2 Diabetes by Global Health and Pharma, London, UK.
Dr. Biplab Malo, who came from one of the poorest places on Earth to the pinnacle of biomedical innovation, is proud of his journey. His only passion now is to provide simple and affordable solutions for complex problems. “Not everybody has a chance to be where I am now. We aim to prevent chronic diseases with our products and services all across the world. While our R&D is continuous, I believe we already have the products that will transform global healthcare.”
