Some leaders build companies. Others build communities. Anna Lau is doing both, but not in the traditional corporate sense. Her journey is less about climbing the ladders of large institutions and more about creating spaces where young, curious minds can explore, innovate, and grow with confidence.
In many ways, Anna’s story begins with purpose and curiosity. Trained deeply in technology and fascinated by the evolving financial world, she began her career navigating banking digital systems. In those early years, she started her professional journey with different banks like HSBC, BNP Paribas, DBS, Bank of Communications and OCBC which enable her to experience different corporate working model and company culture. That profoundly shapes her leadership style in fostering adaptive, inclusive and versatile approaches. This diversity cultivates culture intelligence and she always promote inclusion, leverage diverse perspectives for better decision making and drive-innovation.
In today’s fast changing world, she realized professional growth isn’t about climbing a ladder with fancy titles, but about gaining diverse skills, creating value, learning continuously, to fit in personal purpose. “Life is a journey, you never know what is coming next; You need to sort out your purpose and do it intentionally as what you can do is learn and invest on yourself widely with growth mindset and get well prepared for next as you never know what door will close and what next door will open.” she explained. “Like AI, now we can leverage on AI to optimize the operation cost and expand our business broadly. Two years ago, this door is still under observation but now it is a must dive-in topic for every corporate.” Rather than a linear, title-driven progression, Anna’s shift to focus growth diversively.
“I proactively blended finance with emerging technologies through advanced learning,” she reflects. Base on her banking background, what gets her heart racing the most are those milestones where finance and emerging technologies come together perfectly. Thus, she tried to immerse herself into learning. She completed Oxford Artificial Intelligence Program at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford and Venture Capital and Private Equity Program at Columbia Business School, a decision that didn’t just expand her understanding but also “bling her eyes,” as the 2 subjects able to enable her to understand the bigger picture holistically.
Another unexpected life lesson that has also quietly shaped her mindset during reflection “Sometimes, you don’t push the pace but you read the terrain.” It reminds me to adapt, listen, immerse and get to understand the landscape holistically so as to all the data point for moving forward decision making. This mindset influences everything I do currently, especially in tech-driven banking. More than that, courage & resilience is important ingredient as of today’s leader, but these elements needs time to establish, you have to try with lesson learnt and build internally to be part of your unique leadership perspective.
Above clarity led her to a larger question: How can contribute back? How can we shape better future young leaders? especially in Hong Kong’s dynamic yet competitive environment, how we can enable our youth to get the exposure, support, and mentorship she wished she had earlier?
The answer eventually took her play as community builder in Syndicate Lab & Alliances. Today, it is one of the region’s most purpose-driven emerging-tech communities, a platform for young leaders exploring AI, blockchain, Web3, healthtech, sustainability, and more. Anna serves as the Committee Chairperson for Emerging Technologies, a role that allows her to channel her technical foundation and finance insights into something far more fulfilling: empowering and supporting young leaders.
“What we want is to showcase ideas and help them grow into real market-ready solutions,” she explains. It’s not just an incubator. It’s a mindset shift. The Lab nurtures innovation through scholarships, mentorships, hands-on R&D guidance, and cross-industry alliances. But beyond resources, what we truly offer is belief. “Allow young leaders believed in themself, with passion and no fear, keep walking as helping hands will be always nearby.”
At Syndicate Lab, the initiatives are intentionally designed to be practical rather than theoretical. We believes that innovation becomes meaningful only when it is applied, tested, and refined in real-world conditions. This is why the Lab prioritizes commercialization pathways and real market fit over abstract ideation. “We want young leaders to see not just possibilities, but a roadmap to succeed”.
As a wrap up of 2025, Anna is exciting for what’s next. Moving forward, we will step into new business and leverage technology to support for more different types of company for global reach, aiming to shape the future of small and medium enterprises and corporate by providing modern innovative solution. The platform will provide real collaboration, practical innovation, seamless integration, and lifting each other up. Here’s to curiosity, connection and insights brings a bright 2026 ahead.
For Anna, the personal journey has always mattered more than the résumé. She rarely highlights her own accomplishments, insisting instead that the real milestones are the young innovators who find confidence and clarity through the Lab’s ecosystem. Recognition has nonetheless followed her quietly impactful work. From leading transformative initiatives to being featured by theportfolio.ai as a global business icon, Anna’s influence continues to grow. Yet she considers these acknowledgements as reflections of her community, not her individuality.
Looking ahead, her vision is clear: Co-build Syndicate Lab community across borders, strengthen cross-cultural collaborations, and enable mentorship network for youth who dream differently. Innovative ideas should not die in notebooks, where young leaders should not shrink from complexity, and where shared knowledge should become a collective uplift. This is why we groom telnets for future and why we come to lead.
If her journey proves anything, it is that leadership rooted in empathy and curiosity can transform an entire ecosystem. Anna Lau is not positioning herself as an icon, she is positioning herself as a bridge. A bridge between technology and purpose, learning and doing, and most importantly, between young leaders and the futures they are ready to build.
