Driving data innovation in global healthcare
Marching ahead where few dare to tread, Mamata Khirade is leading data innovation across global healthcare. Mamata’s decade-long journey has been shaped by diverse roles across Bioinformatics, Data Science, and Healthcare Analytics. The core idea has been to develop data-driven solutions that enhance patient care, optimize clinical outcomes, and enable personalized treatment strategies.
Born in India, Mamata completed her Bachelor’s and Master’s in Bioinformatics. She then joined the National Center for Cell Science as a Junior Fellow for two years. Therein began her passion for research and development. In 2012, she discovered a common prognostic gene signature panel in cancer genomics. This groundbreaking work gained her valuable insights into research precision and data analysis.
In 2015, she joined PierianDx as a Bioinformatician, and in 2018, she moved to ThermoFisher Scientific as a Software Engineer. Her career progressed as she developed NGS pipelines that facilitated personalized cancer treatment strategies. Later, she led data science initiatives focused on developing a predictive Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) for epilepsy, further reaffirming her drive to integrate technology and data to address complex healthcare challenges.
Today, Mamata is working in a US-Based company and living in Atlanta, Georgia. She focuses on translating complex data into actionable insights. Her deep experience in research and statistical analysis has refined her technical abilities, helping her address global problems.
Following are few of her many achievements:
- Publication: Khirade MF, Girdhari L, Bapat SA. Derivation of a fifteen gene prognostic panel for six cancers. Scientific Reports. 2015 Aug 14. doi: 10.1038/srep13248 (Impact factor: 5.57)
- Publication: Naik RR, Singh AK, Mali AM, Khirade MF, Bapat SA. A tumor deconstruction platform identifies definitive end points in the evaluation of drug responses. Oncogene. 2015 Apr 27. doi: 10.1038/onc.2015.130. PMID: 25915841 (Impact factor: 8.45)
- TCS (The Cytometry Society) Award 2015 Cytometry – Research

Leading the charge for women in STEM, Mamata has emerged as an industry leader in no time and rose the top of her field. Looking back on her journey, she shares, “Entering the industry in my early 20s has been a challenging yet rewarding journey. As a woman, I often felt the need to continuously prove myself to be heard and recognized. I’ve been fortunate to have the support and encouragement of many incredible individuals who motivated me to grow, though I also encountered a few challenges along the way. Each experience has shaped my resilience and determination.”
Discussing the role of luck vs hard work, she goes on to add that while luck can open doors, she firmly believes it is hard work, persistence, and continuous learning that drive success. Each challenge only strengthened her problem-solving skills and deepened her commitment to innovation.
Hard work, combined with strategic thinking, became the cornerstone of her achievements.
A tiger in the proverbial rat race, for Mamata, success is not about simply keeping pace with others in a competitive race but about carving her own path with focus, strategy, and purpose. Throughout her career, she has embraced challenges, leveraged her expertise in bioinformatics and data science, and pursued meaningful projects that have positively impacted healthcare outcomes.
She truly believes that leadership is about inspiring and empowering others to achieve a shared vision while fostering innovation, collaboration, and growth. “A true leader not only guides but also listens, values diverse perspectives, and creates an inclusive environment where every team member feels motivated and supported. Leadership is about transforming challenges into opportunities, encouraging continuous learning, and ensuring that individual and collective efforts contribute to meaningful outcomes.”
Mamata’s journey from a small town in India to the pedestal of global healthcare is an inspiring tale for millions of girls worldwide. Sharing her own inspiration, she says, “Driven by a passion for advancing the healthcare industry, I aim to leverage my expertise in AI, machine learning, and genomic data analysis to create impactful solutions. My goal is to continue growing professionally through certifications, industry forums, and collaborations with experts, contributing to healthcare innovation and improving patient outcomes on a global scale.”
