There are leaders who build systems, and then there are leaders who build significance. For more than 13 years, Indu Unni has belonged to the rare class of technologists who see engineering not as code, infrastructure, or architecture, but as a deeply human responsibility. Today, as a Senior Engineering Manager at Electronic Arts (EA), leading teams that power global franchises like College Football, Madden NFL, FC, and The SIMS, Indu stands at the intersection of scale, creativity, and purpose. Her work quietly shapes the joy of millions of players around the world, yet her philosophy remains profoundly grounded: “Technology must serve people, not the other way around.”
Indu’s path into engineering leadership was shaped not by sudden leaps, but by deliberate, thoughtful progression. Her journey began at Accenture, where she built a rigorous foundation in enterprise application development and learned the discipline required to manage projects at scale. “Accenture instilled in me a profound sense of discipline,” she recalls. “I understood early on that even the smallest engineering choice can create a ripple effect for millions.” This awareness became the backbone of both the engineer she was becoming and the leader she would grow into.
Her next chapter at Florida Blue marked a shift from execution to strategic architecture. There, Indu played a pivotal role in modernizing complex healthcare platforms across sales, enrollment, and underwriting. These systems were more than technical upgrades; they directly influenced real families, access to care, and outcomes. “Healthcare grounded me,” she reflects. “It reminded me that behind every dataset is a human story.” Leading initiatives that improved reliability, customer experience, and operational transparency remains one of her most meaningful accomplishments.
By the time she joined Electronic Arts, Indu’s expertise in scalable backend architecture, cloud systems, and enterprise transformation was undeniable. At EA, her scope expanded globally. Today, she leads cross-regional engineering teams building resilient backend platforms that elevate player experience through improved performance, discoverability, safety, and reliability. Her work spans content moderation pipelines, discovery platforms, AI-driven developer accelerators, and large-scale backend systems supporting iconic franchises.
“To build for millions is a privilege,” she says. “To build responsibly is a responsibility.”
A defining moment came when her name appeared in the FIFA 23 credits, affirming that the systems she helped architect touched players across continents. “It wasn’t just a personal milestone,” she shares. “It was proof that purposeful engineering creates cultural impact.”
At the heart of Indu’s success is a leadership style defined by empathy, clarity, and empowerment. “Lead by example. Act with empathy. Make decisions with integrity,” she says. Leadership taught her to balance compassion with objective, data-driven judgment, shaping how she builds teams by encouraging autonomy and fostering psychological safety consistently.
Her portfolio reflects the same duality: human-centered yet deeply technical, compassionate yet uncompromising on excellence. Whether designing content moderation systems that keep communities safe or engineering discovery services that help players find joy, Indu’s work blends innovation with integrity. “Engineering,” she says, “isn’t just about solving problems; it’s about anticipating needs, simplifying complexity, and improving experiences.”
Beyond the high-pressure demands of global-scale systems, Indu prioritizes balance with intentional presence. When she is with her family, she is fully there, no multitasking, no blurred boundaries. Her sanctuary is reading, a habit she recently rekindled. “Books remind me that growth often begins in silence,” she says. For her, unwinding isn’t about escape; it’s about returning to clarity.
Recognition has naturally followed her contributions. Being named the technical lead for Florida Blue’s Large Group Underwriting Modernization and earning her place in the FIFA 23 credits stand as markers of a career shaped by reliable execution and profound impact. Yet she values these moments not for prestige, but for what they represent: systems that worked, teams that grew, and players who felt the experience.
When asked for advice, Indu begins with a reminder shaped by her own journey of courage and growth, “Take that leap of faith. You never know what opportunities await unless you step forward. Apply for the role you think you’re not ready for. Ask for the promotion or role change you’ve been quietly hoping for but doubted yourself about. You deserve every opportunity that comes your way. You’ll never truly know what you’re capable of until you take that leap of faith.”
She then offers a two-fold message that reflects the leader she has become:
“Never stop advocating for yourself. You are your strongest champion.”
And equally, “Never stop advocating for others. True leadership is measured by the opportunities you create for those around you.”
In an industry obsessed with speed, Indu’s leadership is defined by intention, empathy, and vision. Her journey reflects steady, purposeful impact, building platforms, teams, and trust. More than a technologist, Indu Unni is a creator of experiences and a champion of responsible innovation.
