The Multifaceted Life: Entrepreneur, Martial Artist, and Mentor
Meet Amrit Kaur Lotay, a driven and accomplished professional with a strong background in economics and a successful career in the technology industry. Born and raised in London, Amrit graduated as an economist before finding her way into the tech world. As the eldest sibling in a family of five, Amrit comes from a close-knit family that has supported her throughout her career journey.
With a passion for technology and a drive to make an impact in the industry, Amrit has spent her career consulting and starting several businesses in fintech, healthtech, and mentoring startups. At present, Amrit is focused on launching the ‘Sanatan Shastar Vidiya’ martial arts app and is also working on another exciting venture that will be revealed later this year.
Throughout her career, Amrit has faced various challenges, including dealing with difficult co-founders and balancing her personal and professional life. However, she has been able to triumph over these challenges by being adaptable and open to change, making informed decisions, and seeking support from her family and friends. “It’s important to keep in mind that it’s not always easy and not everything will go as planned but with the right mindset, support, and being true to yourself, you can overcome any challenge,” says Amrit.
In order to balance her demanding career and personal life, Amrit sets clear goals and priorities, uses tools and technologies to manage her time effectively, and schedules in self-care activities such as martial arts training. “I enjoy my work, but I also make sure to prioritize my time and spend it on things that matter most to me, such as my family and friends. I like to be flexible and open to change, continuously learning and growing as both a professional and a person,” she says.
Amrit believes that today’s organizational culture for working women has improved with policies such as flexible work arrangements, parental leave, and support for women returning to the workforce. However, she also acknowledges that it varies from company to company and not all organizations have adopted these practices. “It’s important to note that policies alone are not enough, it needs to be accompanied by a cultural shift and an attitude change towards working women,” she says.
For women looking to achieve a more prominent role in their organizations, Amrit suggests building relationships through networking, self-promotion, developing leadership skills, seeking mentorship and sponsorship, speaking up and taking initiative, being a role model, and promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
As a woman leader in a male-dominated industry, Amrit’s most challenging barrier has been the lack of female representation and the difficulty in finding mentors and sponsors who understand the unique challenges faced by women.
Amrit’s role models include Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey, Susan Wojcicki, and Reshma Saujani, among other successful leaders who have inspired her to work hard, be resilient, and strive for excellence in her career.
On Saturdays at 11 AM, you can find Amrit at her parents’ house, where she spends quality time together, makes delicious food, or watches movies. For hobbies, Amrit practices martial arts, specifically swords and weapons, and watch TV to wind down and relax. “It’s my way of taking care of my mind and body, disconnecting, and enjoying my ‘me time’,” she says. She is pursuing her passion for fashion by setting up her own brand and collaborating with her sister on a Netflix series centered around building confidence from the inside out – Confidence 360. Keep an eye out for what’s to come in this exciting venture.
This year, Amrit is exploring several new and exciting global ventures in the fields of martial arts, fintech, fashion, startups, and mental health and confidence, so watch this space for updates on her latest endeavors.
