Exploring the World’s Most Spectacular Luxury Train Journeys

Railways were once the lifelines of civilisation, corridors where stories began, cities connected, and strangers discovered common ground. And while planes and highways have transformed the way the world moves, a rare class of trains still preserves something extraordinary: the romance of travel itself. Today, as global travellers seek experiences rich in meaning rather than speed, the world’s most breathtaking train journeys are witnessing a powerful renaissance.
These are not simply routes drawn across maps. They are cultural tapestries, engineering marvels, and reminders of an era when journeys were savoured, not rushed. From Europe’s Art Deco opulence to Asia’s craft-led luxury, from the sweeping wilderness of North America to the high-altitude drama of the Andes and the deserts of Africa, these iconic routes offer a compelling truth, travel is at its most beautiful when it slows down.

The Glacier Express, Switzerland:

A Slow Symphony of Snow and Stone

Few trains are as synonymous with elegance as the Glacier Express, often celebrated as the “world’s slowest express train.” Its eight-hour journey between Zermatt and St. Moritz is less a commute and more a performance, one staged by the Swiss Alps themselves.
The train traverses 291 bridges and 91 tunnels, cutting through the UNESCO-listed Albula/Bernina railway landscape, renowned for its impossible spiral tunnels and towering viaducts. The panoramic windows turn the Alps into a moving theatre: crystalline lakes, silent snowfields, deep gorges, and postcard-perfect villages.
What elevates the Glacier Express is not speed, but serenity. It reminds travellers that slowness can be the ultimate luxury, especially when paired with landscapes sculpted by millennia of nature’s artistry.

Rocky Mountaineer, Canada:

The Cinematic Majesty of the Rockies

If Switzerland offers poetry, Canada delivers a blockbuster. The Rocky Mountaineer is famed for transforming the Canadian Rockies into a full-screen spectacle. Running exclusively during daylight hours, it ensures passengers witness every glacier-fed river, jagged mountain ridge, and pine-forested valley in its full glory.
Its signature GoldLeaf Service features glass-dome coaches and an open-air viewing platform, offering unobstructed panoramas of one of the world’s most dramatic landscapes. The train links Vancouver to mountain destinations such as Banff, Jasper, and Lake Louise, names that resonate with nature lovers across the globe.
Part of the Rocky Mountaineer’s charm is its land-cruise design. Passengers overnight in hotels, making the journey a curated two-day immersion into wilderness, wildlife, and Western Canadian hospitality. It is nature presented not as a backdrop, but as the star of the story.

Belmond Andean Explorer, Peru:

Luxury at the Edge of the Sky

Some journeys take you across borders. The Belmond Andean Explorer takes you above them.
As South America’s first luxury sleeper train, it traces a breathtaking route between Cusco, Lake Titicaca, and Arequipa, across altitudes that rise above 4,000 metres. The Andes unfold in a palette of emerald plains, rugged mountains, roaming alpacas, and skies so clear they feel touchable.

Inside the train, however, the experience shifts to refined comfort. Soft Peruvian textiles, elegant wood finishes, a piano-equipped lounge, and cabins designed like boutique hotel suites create a sense of elevated tranquillity. Meals blend Andean flavours with contemporary finesse, while dedicated excursions to the floating Uros islands or historic highland towns, add texture and cultural meaning.

The Andean Explorer is where raw nature meets sophisticated design, creating a journey that feels both grounded and transcendent.

The Blue Train, South Africa:

A Moving Five-Star Hotel Through Desert and Diamond Country

Few trains command the same reverence as South Africa’s Blue Train, a legendary 1,600-km journey between Pretoria and Cape Town. Known globally as a “five-star hotel on rails,” it has redefined African luxury travel for decades.

Its private suites, complete with en-suite bathrooms and butler service, set a tone of royal indulgence. The train glides across a visually arresting landscape, golden desert plains, rugged mountain passes, and fertile vineyards, capturing the continent’s natural drama with every passing kilometre.

Guests step off the train for curated excursions, often to Kimberley’s historical diamond mines, before returning to the train’s opulent interiors. The dining car, with its rich fabrics and polished service, feels like stepping into an era when elegance was not optional, but expected.

The Blue Train carries not only passengers, but a legacy of African grandeur.

Venice Simplon-Orient-Express:

Where Glamour Becomes a Way of Travelling

To speak of legendary trains is to inevitably speak of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express (VSOE). Perhaps the most iconic luxury train ever built, it is a meticulously restored masterpiece of 1920s Art Deco craftsmanship.

Operating on routes that include Paris, Venice, Prague, and Vienna, the VSOE is a celebration of the golden age of travel. Polished marquetry, velvet sofas, lacquered panels, and Lalique glass define its interiors. Evenings onboard feel theatrical, passengers dress in formal attire, multi-course feasts unfold in candlelit dining cars, and every corridor whispers stories of artists, aristocrats, and adventurers who once travelled in similar splendour.

On this train, the destination is merely an epilogue. The journey is the narrative.

Seven Stars in Kyushu, Japan:

Craftsmanship, Serenity, and Cultural Grace

Japan’s Seven Stars in Kyushu is one of the most exclusive luxury trains in the world, defined by its artistry and intimacy. With only 10 meticulously crafted suites, it represents the pinnacle of Japanese craftsmanship, from hand-carved woodwork and seasonal décor to perfectly composed dining experiences inspired by regional Kyushu cuisine.

Traversing the island’s volcanic peaks, hot spring towns, and lush countryside, Seven Stars offers more than scenic travel, it offers cultural immersion. Every detail, from lighting to hospitality gestures, reflects the Japanese philosophy of omotenashi, thoughtful, anticipatory, wholehearted service.

This is not a train journey. It is a meditative retreat in motion.

Maharajas’ Express, India:

A Regal Ode to the Age of Kings

India’s Maharajas’ Express channels the grandeur of royal travel during the era of the maharajas. Its interiors, deep jewel tones, ornate motifs, and palace-inspired embellishments, make each coach feel like a moving museum of Indian decorative arts.

The train’s itineraries span Rajasthan, Delhi, Agra, and other cultural capitals, offering guided excursions to palaces, forts, heritage sites, and national parks. With personalized service, fine dining, and curated experiences, it transforms each day into a chapter of India’s cultural chronicle.

Few trains in the world capture history, luxury, and emotional storytelling with such immersive richness.

As the world rethinks travel in a post-digital age, trains embody a philosophy that feels both nostalgic and necessary. They encourage mindful travel, foster genuine connection with landscapes, and offer a sustainable alternative to carbon-heavy routes.
More importantly, they preserve traditions, of craftsmanship, hospitality, and cultural narrative, that risk disappearing in an increasingly automated world. Train journeys create space: to observe, to reflect, to be present. They restore the wonder of motion itself.

From the snow-laced passes of Switzerland to the wilderness of Canada, the spiritual stillness of the Andes, the deserts of Africa, and the cultural richness of India and Japan, the world’s most breathtaking train journeys remind us of a timeless truth:
Rare. Nostalgic. Luxurious. Eternal.

These trains do more than take you places, they transform you along the way.
