A Life in Service of Sport, Society & the Nation
In the vibrant heart of Dubai, in 1971, a boy was born who would one day become a trailblazer in both national service and international sport. That boy Major Omar Al Marzooqi would grow into a man whose journey has mirrored the meteoric rise of his homeland: full of ambition, discipline, and an unwavering sense of purpose.
From an early age, Omar was drawn to the power and spirit of competition. By 1984, as a young teenager, he joined the prestigious Al-Nasr Sports Club, pouring his energy into handball. For over 14 years, he represented the club across multiple age groups, not just chasing titles, but mastering the deeper values of strategy, resilience, and teamwork. These formative years built the bedrock of a career that would go far beyond the court.
When his playing days concluded, Omar’s passion for sport found new expression. In 1996, he stepped into officiating, bringing with him a fierce sense of fairness and professionalism. It wasn’t long before his excellence was recognized: by 2000, he had earned his continental referee badge in Muscat, and in 2003, the international badge in Kuwait. His whistle, always firm yet fair, became a symbol of integrity on the world stage.
Over the span of his officiating career, Major Omar has overseen more than 1,050 local and 170 international matches, in addition to observing over 100 games worldwide. But perhaps his most groundbreaking moment came when he became the first Asian referee to officiate the semi-finals and finals of the Handball World Cup an arena traditionally dominated by European officials. In doing so, he not only broke barriers but rewrote the rulebook on what was possible for referees from the region.
His extraordinary credentials led to his selection as a technical observer at the 2016 Rio Olympics an honor few attain. Overseeing 12 handball matches at the Games, including the quarter and semi-finals, he represented the UAE with dignity and precision. For him, it was more than a personal achievement; it was a moment of national pride and global recognition.
Yet, Omar’s life cannot be defined by sport alone. Running parallel to his athletic career is his deep and ongoing commitment to public service. A decorated officer in the Dubai Police. His policing journey has included key assignments across the Criminal Investigations Department, the Central Jail, and Dubai Airport each role reinforcing his values of justice, community, and discipline.
What makes Major Omar’s story particularly inspiring is how seamlessly he integrates these worlds sport and service into a unified mission. Whether on the field or in uniform, he leads with honor, humility, and an unwavering sense of responsibility.
Beyond his professional achievements, Major Omar has long believed in uplifting others. His community outreach includes championing sports as a path to youth development and social cohesion. One of his proudest contributions is to the “Positive Spirit” initiative by Dubai Police, which promotes cultural, volunteer, and community-based activities to foster a safer, more united society.
As a mentor, he is deeply invested in nurturing the next generation of athletes, referees, and officers. For Omar, mentorship isn’t about giving advice it’s about transmitting values: patience, respect, and lifelong learning. These are the tools, he believes, that build a legacy worth leaving.
Off the field and away from the uniform, Major Omar is a devoted family man. A proud husband and father to seven children Ashjan, Al-Anoud, Muhammad, Maitha, Ghanem, Abdullah, and Afra his family is his sanctuary and his ultimate source of strength. They are the heartbeat behind his accomplishments and the future he strives to shape.
