The legends of the Bermuda Triangle are numerous due to it being embedded in the popular culture of the world, where many aircraft, ships and other vehicles have notoriously gone missing. Located in the North Atlantic Ocean, whose three points are Puerto Rico, Bermuda and Miami (Florida), each year, new theories debunking the previous ones emerge, but there has still not been any concrete proof of its true nature. Due to the combination of these factors, it is known as the ‘Devil’s Triangle’ owing to its mysterious history.

The rare occurrences started taking place in 1945 when five American torpedo bombers carrying 14 bomber crew and 13 crew members disappeared over the area. After the rescue operation started, a rescue plane which had gone to find the crew was also lost. From that day forward, the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle has intensified. This threw many theories out in the open after the revelation that the freighter USS Cyclops, which had 366 people abroad, went missing in the same area in 1918.

Though many reasons like navigation issues, weather conditions, and running out of fuel are sought to be the answer, this didn’t stop the spike in the curiosity of people. The US Coast Guard determined the various causes and said, “First, the ‘Devil’s Triangle’ is one of the two places on Earth where a magnetic compass points in the direction of geographic true north – when it usually points in the direction of magnetic north. The difference between the two is known as compass variation. The difference between them varies up to 20 degrees when a person orbits the Earth. If the change or error of this compass is not compensated for and calculated, a navigator may find himself far from the originally planned course and in serious trouble.”

Still, many documentaries, shows, books and more have been about the mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle. The most popular theory is the existence of extraterrestrials who are doing the abductions of people by hiding in the treacherous waters of the Atlantic Ocean or using a super beam to suck people into outer space. Many people believe that Flight 19, where the crew disappeared mid-flight, was due to UFOs.

Other conspiracy theorists were quick to blame the water as they thought that methane gas was present that would form a large bubble of gas that would make the planes and ships sink to the bottom of the floor bed. Though no such record has been found yet about the same, the theory further states that rogue waves are the actual culprit causing supermassive waves to engulf the transportation in a jiffy that comes out of nowhere.

Some even believe that the Bermuda Triangle is the gateway to the Atlantis, which is a lost city of gold that remains hidden in the vicinity of the waters. So, in order to keep this mythical city hidden, many anomalies are created, making it hard to detect its existence. But with a decline in the number of disappearances in this Devil’s Triangle, scientists believe that evidence supporting all these claims is baseless. They feel that the climatic conditions present in the area lead to tropical storms and hurricanes. Also, the Gulf Stream is very rapid and could change the weather very quickly, making it calm to violent in a matter of minutes and hours. Also, with a plethora of islands in the Caribbean Sea, the water gets shallow around that area, which makes it hard for ships to navigate. When doing a survey of the most dangerous areas in the water, the Bermuda Triangle did not even appear on the list, and there are many other places on Earth that have seen more disasters. But the lore and mystery remain in the hearts of the people, which will continue to surface even more theories for the time to come.
