Movies have a knack for changing the whole worldview of the audience as they take them on an emotional ride like no other. Here are some world movies which have captured the attention of the global cinematic audience.

  1. 2001: A Space Odyssey

A landmark in the science fiction genre that has propelled this genre to new heights and influenced future sci-fi movies. Considered the greatest, this movie has very advanced visual effects and a screenplay about artificial intelligence, which was unheard of at the time. It follows the Discovery One Voyager, who is in search of an alien monolith with the help of the sentient computer HAL.

  • In The Mood For Love

This movie is more of an aesthetic paradise where a cinematic piece transcends into ageless tranquillity. It undeniably forces a person’s mind to get lost in the nostalgia of a time and place that was never experienced. A simple story of two people who are cheated on by their spouses only to find comfort in each other’s company. The red undertone and a beautiful music score make this movie one of the greatest.

  • Spirited Away

This movie is about a young girl, Chihiro, whose parents have been turned into pigs by a witch, Yubaba and races against time to free herself and her parents from this strange land. Unlike any other animated film ever made, it stretches beyond anyone’s imagination with absurd characters, a unique storyline, and colourful detailing that will take you on a roller coaster ride.

  • A Separation

This Iranian movie depicts the myriad intricacies of human emotion in such a vivid and beautiful manner that the viewer gets drawn into the lives of the characters. Simon and Nader are on the verge of divorce, and their daughter needs to choose which parent to be with. Things get even more complicated as a caregiver for Nader’s bedridden father arrives.

  • The Bicycle Thief

Set in the aftermath of World War 2, which has left people in desperate need of work while battling poverty. Invoking a humane side, Antonio is a poor father whose bicycle gets stolen on the first day of work. This serves as a devastating blow to the family, and their desperate search for the bicycle ensues across the city of Rome.

  • The Godfather

Often considered the greatest movie of all time, it put the gangster genre in the spotlight. With a heightened storyline, epic cinematography and chilling soundtrack, this movie is superbly memorable. Vito Corleone serves as the mafia patriarch of the family whose son gets embroiled in a world of crime after an assassination attempt against his father.

  • Raise the Red Lantern

In one of the landmark Chinese movies, the themes of love, betrayal, jealousy, and socio-economic dynamics are perfectly captured in this film, and each frame looks like an artwork. Set in the 1920s, a young girl is married to a wealthy man with three other wives. Arriving in this abode, she has to fight for attention to get noticed by her husband, as she eventually loses herself in this game.

  • Amelie

Amelie is a beautiful movie in and out, and the main character, despite having flaws, becomes the crowd favourite. A shy and whimsical waitress, bored of her isolated life, decides to turn things around and help those around her. This romantic comedy goes straight to the heart and feels like a cup of warm hot chocolate on a cold winter night.

  • Y Tu Mama Tambien

Set in Mexico, two best friends, one from the upper class and the other from the working class, embark on a journey to a beach with a mysterious beauty which would change their life forever. The movie is a cinematic wonder as it showcases some really phenomenally written dialogues and captivating picturisation that makes this one a crowd favourite.
