Ghost sightings have captured the attention of an entire generation who want to catch this phenomenon on camera. Many places have sprung up that claim supernatural experience but this list has some heavyweight contenders who have placed the biggest bets on being the spookiest of them all.
1. Bhangarh Fort, India
Speaking of scary places and missing out on Bhangarh is a shame on the list. This harrowing ruined city in Rajasthan is considered to be cursed and no one enters the place after nightfall and it is believed that whoever does enter never returns. Many curious visitors go there during the day to witness any paranormal activity for themselves. It is believed that a curse was cast on the village by a sage who was angry with the King for having disobeyed his wishes, since then the city had a downfall and no one resides in this place infested with spirits.
2. Hoia-Baciu Forest, Romania
With Romanian legends of vampires and other mythical creatures, this forest is a proud contender as it is considered one of the spookiest forests in the world. It gained fame when a photograph of an apparent UFO which was encircling the forest was captured in 1968, since then it is believed to be a portal to the other world. Many people have gone missing or eerie incidents have been reported which is the reason behind it being called the “Bermuda Triangle of Transylvania”. Dark and dense curved trees make up its ambience which resembles a set straight out of a horror movie.
3. Banff Springs Hotel, Alberta, Canada
Situated atop the Canadian mountainside in a secluded location, this hotel is almost 140 years old and its chateau-like appearance gives it a royal look. But the interior tells a different tale as this place is riddled with numerous supernatural entities including the ghost of a bride who tripped down the stairs. A family is also said to have been murdered in room 873 which has been sealed since then. Some horror enthusiasts still make reservations here and have claimed to see the friendly spirit of a bellman who helps the guests. This place surely feels like the haunted hotel seen in the movie ‘The Shining’.
4. Tower of London, England
The Tower located in the heart of London was built in 1066 by William the Conqueror and has a long history associated with the English regency. This fortress was also a prison where the notorious execution of Anne Boleyn took place. This dull and grey site also saw the imprisonment of princes and their subsequent disappearance which paved the way for an array of ghost stories that have subsequently sprung up. It is said that a headless torso lurks around its vast corridors and instils fear regarding the tower. Perhaps the character of nearly headless Nick from Harry Potter was inspired by this spirit.
5. Jazirat Al Hamra, United Arab Emirates
The middle east where the tales of the Arabian Nights originated and is the home to endless deserts also has an abandoned and spooky town of Jazirat Al Hamra. A well built and thriving village which consists of mud houses and mosques was left abandoned in 1968 and this gave birth to numerous chilling stories about this site. It is said that genies (jinns) infest its empty streets and bizarre noises can be heard echoing from all around.
6. Myrtles Plantation, USA Located in the town of St. Francisville in New Orleans, this plantation has a history of the gruesome murder of 10 people and since then many poltergeist sightings have become a common phenomenon.
