Tenacious, Tactful and Trustworthy
With over 15 years of experience, Sinchan Banerjee is a trailblazer who leaves a trail of success wherever he goes, which is why his exceptional skills prove unmatched. He is a highly accomplished Principal Data Architect driving enterprise-grade data platform solutions, large-scale data migrations, and digital transformations across multiple industries. He has a proven track record of architecting and delivering data engineering solutions for batch and streaming workloads in cloud and on-premises environments.
He is also the author of the book ‘Scalable Data Architecture with Java’ and a patent holder for predictive analytics. Sinchan is recognized for his contributions to the field and has received numerous awards for leadership, innovation, and technical excellence. His passion for mentoring and team-building has fostered the development of highly capable teams.
Being from a small town in India, Sinchan’s parents were very proactive in providing him with the best education possible. As a result, he was fortunate to do his schooling at Ram Krishna Mission Vidyapith, Deoghar, one of India’s top residential schools. He then pursued Computer Science Engineering at SRM University, where he was one of the top rankers and received the Merit Scholarship award. He started his professional journey as a Software Engineer at TCS. Subsequently, his journey in data engineering began when he joined Hewlett-Packard R&D in 2012. Here, he led the forecasting features and data warehouse of HP StoreOnce. During this period, he developed a novel storage forecasting algorithm that outperformed the accuracy of the industry-leading algorithm at that time and was patented by HP.
Then, he gained a decade-long experience as a Data Architect leading various large-scale data migrations, building enterprise data platforms, and leading digital transformations across the industry at Impetus, United Health Group, Data Core Systems, American Express, UST, and Elevancehealth.
Currently, he serves as a Principal Data Architect for UST. During this decade, these organizations recognized and awarded him multiple times for leadership, innovation, digital acumen, and agility. He has regularly contributed to various open-source projects, apache communities, and blogs. He was also approached by Packt publication to write a book on data engineering, which was published in 2022. In 2023, he pursued the Executive Leadership Program at Cornell University. To hone his skills further, he finished a Professional Education program on AI in Healthcare at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He says, “I had the opportunity to be on the judging panel for the Stratus Award 2024. Currently, I am working on Gen AI integrations with Data Engineering to develop new and better solutions in healthcare.”
Sinchan has been bestowed with numerous awards throughout his career, including the UST STAR Award in 2024 and many UST Star Awards for excellence and innovation. Recently, he was recognized for being part of the judging panel for the Stratus Award for Cloud Computing. In 2018, he was given the Opal Award for Innovation at United Health Group and the Award for Excellent Technical Contribution at Hewlett-Packard in 2013, to name a few.
Sinchan describes his leadership style and remarks, “I believe in inspirational, collaborative leadership, where as a leader I create an innovative and conducive environment for people to engage, collaborate, and develop innovative solutions. As a leader, I try to be very objective with my feedback and suggestions, which help the team refine and develop the most optimized version of the solution. This also enables our team members to feel more valued, become more accountable, and be involved in making the plan successful.”
He feels that his strength lies in his innovative outlook, determination, persistence, and resilience. However, his biggest strength is his ability to cancel out the noise, have a zen focus on his priorities, and continue doing his job. Sinchan feels that having a positive outlook without getting bogged down by life’s challenges helps him navigate them. Looking to a challenge as an opportunity helps him think out of the box and solve it innovatively.
For Sinchan, the source of his inspiration is technical excellence and opening up new horizons in the field of data engineering. He says, “I want to create a long-term positive impact in the field of data engineering and, hence, contribute, in my own small way, to the advancement of human civilization and humane experiences.”
He leaves with a message for our readers: “Talent is a great asset but doesn’t guarantee success. Only focusing on your goal, consistent hard work, and the ability to recuperate from your failures can lead you toward success. To grow in the ever-dynamic field of data engineering, you should never lose interest in learning and trying out newer technologies and products.”
